Tallulah

First I must say that you may have noticed that I have not blogged much lately.  Quite often I write about politics.  If you are like me, you have had your fill of the political scene.
So here is something different.  Each day I read Wikipedia’s day in history.  Each date has a list of important events that occurred.  There is also a list of famous people who were born on that day and those who have died on the date over the years.  There are many interesting people that could serve as the bases of blog posts.

Today, January 31, I noticed the name Tallulah Bankhead.  I asked a few people if they remembered her.  They did not.  She was a character!  I encourage you read about her.

But this blog post is not about the life of Tallulah Bankhead.  It is about a discovery I made while reading about her.

Tallulah hosted a radio program called “The Big Show.”  Though it received some acclaim, it lasted only a couple of seasons, a victim of technology.  Television was too much of a lure to those looking for entertainment.  Television is now experiencing the same threat from technology.

Back to what I found.   At the end of “The Big Show,” the guest stars gathered around the microphone and sang the closing number “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You.”  On the Internet Archive web site, I found a sound clip of one of these show-closers.  Each person in the cast sang a line or two.  It is the cast that is amazing.

Singing “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You” are Tallulah Bankhead, Judy Garland, Groucho Marx, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Gordon MacRae, Meredith Willson, Joan Davis, and The Andrews Sisters!

Feeling that this clip needs wider exposure, I made a video using it.  I think it came out quite well, but you be the judge.

I realize that not everyone gets excited by entertainment history.  I do know that I have some soul mates, however.  This one’s for you.
